the smell of food wafted through the hallways of rosedale academy. melanie, a sixteen year old girl, was sitting in her dorm room in her pajamas. she was contemplating whether or not she should go eat or not. but when she inhaled the scent of breakfast, she got to her feet and wandered to her closet. she let out a sigh as she chose a sweatshirt, a black one, that would cover the scars on her wrists. she also chose a pair of red skinny jeans that hugged her body perfectly, and also almost matched her hair. she put on a pair of bunny slippers, since she was too lazy to put on a sensible pair of shoes, and stood in front of her mirror. she took her eyeliner pencil and traced the outline of her eye, but the line was thin, unlike most days. melanie was just simply too lazy and didn't really care who she saw in the cafeteria. she put the pencil down and looked at her wrists. they were slashed with scars. she quickly hid them, swallowed her tears back, and marched out the door and paraded to the cafeteria.
when she got there, she noticed the cafeteria was busy. glass and metal chinked together and people ate. it smelled almost like a gourmet restaurant, and melanie was practically drooling. she got herself a plate and began to stack food on. she took two slices of toast with cheese, and a bowl of lucky charms cereal. happy with her descision, she chose the appropriate silverwear and cat down in one of the last empty tables. she didn't see any of her friends, only random students whose names were unknown. she took her spoon, dipped it into the bowl of cereal, and ate. she looked around the room, watching people having converations and laughing. it was hard to believe they were here, in this "mental hospital." they all look so... normal... mel thought to herself. she used the back of her sleeve to wash away the milk on her lips. she two chairs next to her were lonely, until a boy came up to her and looked her in the eyes. "is someone using this chair?" he asked melanie, pointing to the chair on her left. melanie just simply shook her head, and the boy dragged the chair away. mel sighed and looked at the other empty chair. ho hum, she thought to herself, biting into her toast and watching people walk in and out of the cafeteria.

There was only one reason that Denny could possibly be out of bed early enough to arrive for breakfast. Actually there really wasn’t a good reason for Denny to be awake this early; it was a strange anomaly that could only be explained by food. Rarely did the smell of food penetrate Denny’s deep sleep, rarely did anything interrupt Denny sleeping, but today must have been meant to be because Denny snapped awake at the smell of the cafeteria’s fresh breakfast seeped into his room through the cracks of his door. Still kind of sleepy Denny rolled out of bed and pulled on some skinny jeans, a t-shirt, and through on a cardigan without buttoning it before pulling a hat on over his messy blond hair that still found a way to fall in his face and poke out even with the hat on. Not really caring about how much noise he made Denny kicked open his dorm door, still not really awake. Slowly Denny ambled down the hallway, his usually long strides shorter due to the early hour. Even though his strides were short being six foot four inches tall allowed Denny to get to the cafeteria at a sufficient pace. It was when he entered the cafeteria when he fully woke up. The crowd was what woke him up; you see Denny usually avoided large crowds like this. He found that the crowd in his head was enough so why add the noise of other people into it? Being fully awake now allowed Denny to realize the noise in his head not just the noise around him; if it wasn’t for the fact that his stomach was now growling Denny would probably be running away from the cafeteria instead of walking inside of it. The voices in his head were incoherent at the time so Denny found it easier to go through the line and start loading his tray with just about anything that looked appetizing. Ten minutes and a large stack of pancakes, a couple pieces of bacon, a bowl of cereal, and two glasses of milk later Denny was out of the line without any conflict with anybody else or himself. Pushing his way through the crowded cafeteria Denny found the only table that wasn’t occupied by a large group. Is someone using this chair? Denny asked the girl with shockingly bright ginger hair that was sitting at the table. When she shook her head Denny placed his tray on the table and began digging into his food. Dumbass don’t just shove your face with food a voice in his head scolded him Introduce yourself to the girl! Denny’s eyes widened before looking up at the girl he had just sat down next to. Quickly ducking his head back down Denny continued eating. It’s not like Denny wasn’t a social person, Denny had plenty of friends; well he had friends when he was in a good mood. Right now though in the crowd of people Denny wasn’t too sure when he would shift from the current neutral mood he was in now to a very good or very bad mood. However Denny did have to agree with the voices, it would be a better if he said something so the girl didn’t think he was some weirdo that just sat down next to her and started chowing down on his food like he hadn’t eaten in weeks. I’m Denny Denny said with a small smile, raising his bright blue eyes from his food to look at the ginger girl. mel watched the boy start eating. he almost seemed like a monster from the way he was eating. she was entertained by the way she ate. she slowly ate her cereal while keeping her green eyes on the boy. he looked up at melanie and smiled. "i'm denny," he spoke. mel smiled back and blinked her emerald eyes. "i'm mel,' she spoke. "nice to meet you, denny." she nodded towards him and dipped her spoon into the cereal bowl and took in another spoon of lucky charms. she watched the cereal swirl while her spoon moved in it. her mind focused on the different scene. mel was six. she was swirling lucky charms in the bowl, watching spongebob on the tv. parker, her younger brother, was playing with legos. the door's lock chinked and the door opened violently. her dad walked in, staggering drunkly. mel turned to look at him. "looks like daddy's sick again..." mel mumbled to herself, and turned back to watch tv. her dad fell over and starts laughing. parker stood up and walked next to mel on the couch. mel looked over at her dad. he fell asleep, but his face was imprinted with a black eye and multiple scratches. mel sighed and looked back down at her stirring cereal. mel snapped out of her mind, and looked back up at denny. she realized her mouth was gaping open and she shut it. she wiped her eyes, for no reason actually, and put her hands on her lap. what was that? she thought to herself. i've never had a flashback like that... she noticed she was shaking, since she remembered what happened next. a man came into the room, also stumbling in drunk, and started to hit her dad. she shook her head, not wanting to remember anything else about her drunken father. she looked back up at denny and smirked a bit. "hungry, aren't you?" she joked, eyeing the food on his plate.

Being awake this early didn’t really allow Denny’s brain to fully function. Not that Denny could really complain because not having a fully functional brain allowed the voices to be quiet and easily avoidable. Maybe Denny should start waking up this early all the time so he could have part of the day that was quieter than usual. However at the moment even though his head wasn’t screaming at him everybody in the cafeteria was shouting over each other ruining this rare moment. Next time Denny woke up this early he’d probably hold off going into big crowds like this, but as of now Denny was stuck in a large crowd shoveling his large amount of food in his face. Seeing as Denny is taller than average he consumes more food than the average person. The meal that he was having now was a pretty average size for him. As a kid he was never deprived of food, at least his parents provided him with the basics. However instead of being deprived of the physical things in life, he was deprived of the other things. Its not as if Denny is this weak little thing, but the lack of people in his life and some screwy genetics led him to being how he is now. Of course his parents couldn’t have known and of course they tell themselves that all the time to justify their crazy son. Sometimes Denny wished he could just blame them for everything because it would be easier, but he’s not stupid enough to do that, well he wasn’t stupid enough to blame them while he was in a normal state of mind like he was now. When the girl, Mel she said her name was, spoke he didn’t ignore her words like he did with her introduction. Instead he stopped eating and looked at his food, then to hers. Sometimes Denny forgot that his stomach was the size of an elephants, but even so he didn’t care. Apparently the girl thought his load of food was a lot, even though it was pretty typical for Denny. I like to eat Denny said point blank, just staring at the girl with his bright blue eyes. Sometimes Denny was kind of blunt, but of course leave it to the voices in his head to scold him for it. You’re being blunt dumbass a voice shouted in his hear. Shaking his head to get the echo that the voice left behind to go away, Denny put on a small smile again and said I’m a big guy I need food. Looking back at her bowl of cereal Denny added You should eat more than just cereal, you’ll shrivel up.WORDS `` 451 STATUS `` finished TAGGED `` mel OUTFIT `` clicksersNOTES `` i finally made my post
